R2090 Grant Payment 2024: SASSA Old Age Grant Increase

Many older people in South Africa are struggling to make ends meet. To help alleviate this issue, the government has decided to increase the SASSA old-age grant from 2024 to 2025. Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced this during the fiscal year 2024–2025 budget presentation, stating that social assistance would go up by almost 5%. This change aims to support the financial stability of elderly South Africans and ensure they have adequate resources to meet their daily needs.

The R2,090 grant payment in 2024 is part of the government’s efforts to support older South Africans. The Old Age Grant, provided by the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), targets individuals aged 60 and above, offering financial assistance to cover essential living expenses. This grant is vital for many elderly citizens who may not have sufficient retirement savings or other sources of income.

The Old Age Grant program provides financial support to South African citizens who are 60 years old or older. As of 2024, the maximum monthly payment is R2,090 for those aged 60 to 74, and R2,110 for those over 75. This increase from the previous amounts is a response to the rising cost of living and inflation, ensuring that older individuals can maintain their standard of living.

To qualify for this grant, applicants must be South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees. They cannot be receiving any other social grant, and their assets must not exceed specific thresholds: R2,455,200 for married individuals and R2,227,600 for single individuals.

It’s important to note that dishonesty or non-cooperation during the grant review process can lead to the suspension of the grant. Since its inception in 1994, the Old Age Grant has grown from R390 to R2,090 in 2024, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting the elderly.

According to the Finance Minister, beneficiaries will receive higher payments in the 2024-2025 fiscal year. Starting October 1, 2024, individuals aged 60 to 74 will receive R2,090, up from R2,080. Those aged 75 and above will receive R2,110, an increase from the previous R2,100. This adjustment ensures that the grant keeps pace with inflation and the cost of living.

Minister Godongwana also highlighted that the government plans to spend more on grants as the number of recipients increases. By March 2026, the number of grant recipients in South Africa is expected to rise from 18.6 million to 19.6 million.

Payment Dates

• July 2024 Payment: Beneficiaries received their payment on July 2, 2024.
• August 2024 Payment: The next scheduled payment is on August 2, 2024.
• Future Payments: Payments for subsequent months, including September and December 2024, will follow a similar schedule.

Once an application is approved, payments start from the date of application. SASSA disburses the grant through various methods, including cash payments at designated locations, electronic deposits into bank or Postbank accounts, and payments to institutions like assisted living facilities. If beneficiaries cannot collect the payment themselves, they can authorize someone to do it on their behalf.

SASSA may review the grant based on the income reported in the application. Beneficiaries will be notified of any upcoming reviews three months in advance.
